An Antares-class starship.

Antares-class Scout ship is pretty used as a scientific survey and the small-load cargo and personnel transport support of scientific missions and small colonies. It was first introduced in the late 2240s/early 2250s and has ceased production, but is still in active use, and some of the earliest ships are still serving in rotation out as short-range Merchant Marine transports or civilian vessels. The ship holds a regular crew of about a hundred, but can hold a full crew of twice that for when science and engineering missions are called for; at the smaller crew size range, a Lieutenant Commander of sufficient time-in-grade could command one as a first command, but for longer-term, longer-range, full-on science surveys or colonial support mission profiles, a full Commander would normally be in command. A Captain would command one only for an Antares assigned to a very specific mission of great importance or delicacy.
