The following certifications require rigorous testing and are designed to qualify officers for certain hazardous or alert-situation duties. Officers seeking certification must demonstrate proficiency in the relevant areas via a series of tests in order to earn the qualification notation in their service jacket.

How to Obtain your Certifications

Each Certification Exam may be proctored by the Executive Officer or Training Officer of the ship, as well as any Department Head who himself or herself has passed the Certification Exam. In addition, many exams have additional personnel who can proctor them as noted in the Certification Exam description.

Certification depends on a series of +rolls which will determine success or failure, and the tests are listed for each individual certification. You may spend courage as per the normal rules for same. A dramatic success on any roll eliminates one failure on that set of +rolls; a dramatic failure, however, either fails the test entirely (on most tests) or, worse, has the potential for catastrophe (on a few tests as noted below).

Courage must be spent immediately after the roll is completed. You can not complete all the rolls and then decide to spend courage. In fact, people should avoid using 'roll scripts' to make all the rolls at once as this will void your chance to spend courage on all but the last roll.

Officers are limited to acquiring five current certifications at any one time. This does not include the Line Officer certification.

The Certifications

Flight Control

The Flight Control certification is required of any officer who wishes to sit at Flight Control (though this is not usually enforced for Runabouts). The certification reflects basic competence in plotting courses either manually or with computer assistance. It also tests an officer's ability to plot the courses from memory or strict coordinates as well as execution of the courses and basic maneuvering.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, any commissioned officer of the Flight Control Section of Command Branch can proctor the exam for someone seeking Flight Control Certification. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is considered passing as long as each Skill/Specialty combination has at least one successful +roll.

  8. Space Sciences/Stellar Cartography vs 4
  9. Space Sciences/Stellar Cartography vs 7
  10. Space Sciences/Stellar Cartography vs 10

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)

The EMT certification is a Medical test reflecting basic knowledge of the following: Diagnosis of injuries via tricorder scan, treatment of simple injuries, and proper placement in medical stasis for those injuries beyond the EMT's immediate skill. EMT Certification qualifies the holder to provide basic care; it is common to Security Officers who wish to serve as Combat Medics. Medical department officers, with the exception of non-M.D. Counselors, are not required to hold this certification; non-M.D.-track Counselors who wish to provide first aid/trauma care require this certification to provide it, and may test for this certification accordingly.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, any qualified M.D. (including the CMO, Medical Duty Officer, or M.D.-qualified Medical Specialists and Counselors) and the Chief Nurse can proctor the exam for someone seeking EMT Certification. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is considered passing as long as each Skill/Specialty combination has at least one successful +roll.

Tests for certification

  1. First Aid/Triage vs 4
  2. First Aid/Triage vs 7

  8. Personal Equipment/Medical Tricorder vs 4
  9. Personal Equipment/Medical Tricorder vs 7
  10. Personal Equipment/Medical Tricorder vs 10

EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity)

The EVA certification focuses on the officer's ability to maneuver external to a ship or shuttle or station in an environmental suit, with the aid of suit thrusters or short, controlled movements in low-or-zero-gravity. It is common to Engineers who have to perform repairs external to a ship or station.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, any Engineering Section Head, or the Damage Control Engineer, can proctor this exam if possessing the certification. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is considered passing as long as each Skill/Specialty combination has at least one successful +roll. The player must be able to verify that the character possesses the Environmental Suit specialty of the Personal Equipment skill. If the character has already earned HAZMAT certification, the Personal Equipment/Environmental Suit tests can be waived. If the player can also verify that the character possesses the merit of Zero-G Training, either the Athletics/Climbing or the Vehicle Operations/Suit Thrusters tests can be waived.

Note that this is a 'live simulation', with real EVA suits and realistically simulated vacuum and zero-g conditions, such that if the character possesses the Zero-G Intolerance flaw, it applies to the taking of the tests for this certification; in addition, should the character dramatically fail any test for the EVA certification, the proctor must make an Instruction/Professional Training test at a difficulty equal to the original contest that was dramatically failed by the test-taker. If this Instruction test is failed, or if the proctor lacks the Instruction skill, staff must be notified immediately to adjudicate the scene and determine the potentially dangerous or even lethal results of the cascade of failures.

Tests for certification

  1. Personal Equipment/Environmental Suit vs 4
  2. Personal Equipment/Environmental Suit vs 7
  3. Personal Equipment/Environmental Suit vs 8

  8. Vehicle Operations/Suit Thrusters vs 4
  9. Vehicle Operations/Suit Thrusters vs 7
  10. Vehicle Operations/Suit Thrusters vs 10

HAZMAT (Hazardous Materials)

The HAZMAT certification focuses on the officer's ability to clean up hazardous spills and messes, to work with radioactive debris, and to ensure the safe containment of dangerous biological, chemical, or radioactive cargo. It is common to Engineers and Operations officers, but some Medical officers obtain HAZMAT certification to enable them to provide emergency medical first-response on the direct site of contaminant mishaps.

The player must be able to verify that the character possesses the Environmental Suit specialty of the Personal Equipment skill and either the Biological or Chemical specialty of the First Aid skill. If the character has already earned EVA certification, the Personal Equipment/Environmental Suit tests can be waived.

Note that this is a 'live simulation', with real EVA suits and holodeck safeties turned off to simulate the stresses of training with real hazardous materials. Should the character dramatically fail any test for the HAZMAT certification, the proctor must make an Instruction/Professional Training test at a difficulty equal to the original contest that was dramatically failed by the test-taker. If this Instruction test is failed, or if the proctor lacks the Instruction skill, staff must be notified immediately to adjudicate the scene and determine the potentially dangerous or even lethal results of the cascade of failures.

  9. Shipboard Systems/Environmental or Systems Engineering/Environmental vs 7
  10. Shipboard Systems/Environmental or Systems Engineering/Environmental vs 10

Rapid Response

This test certifies the character for Rapid Response missions. With the exception of the Rapid Response Officer, who is considered qualified by default, and unarmed medical personnel, Rapid Response certification is required to take part in Rapid Response missions. Training characters to the high degree of readiness that this entails is the job of the Rapid Response Officer.

Proctors and Procedures

As an exception to the normal rules noted above, it is important to note that only the Rapid Response Officer can proctor this exam -- an exception is made for the XO or Training Officer if these officers hold this certification, and then only if the RRO cannot be available. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is required to pass. In addition to these tests, the character must have scored at least in the Superior category or its equivalent in his or her last Fitness and Marksmanship tests during OER.

  10. Unarmed Combat/<Any> vs 10

Threat Response

This is test which qualifies one to take a Security or Tactical station on the Bridge of a ship or Operations Center of a station. It is considered cross-training in certain limited, emergency duties. The tests reflect knowledge of how to use the ship's weaponry, the protocols for internal security emergency response, and the rules governing use of external or internal force. It is important to note that active duty Security Branch officers (even those in another section such as the Armory), and Rapid Response and Diplomatic Security officers are not required to have this certification to stand a watch at a Security or Tactical station.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, the Security Branch Section Heads (Deputy Chief of Security, Security and Tactical Duty Officers, and Armory Officer) can proctor this exam. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is required to pass.

Tests for certification

  1. Shipboard Systems/Tactical vs 4

  10. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 10

Mission Security

The Mission Security certification qualifies an officer to serve as a Security officer on most Away Teams or during security sweeps of a ship or station. Active-duty Security Branch officers, as well as the Rapid Response Officer, are not required to test for this certication. Conversely, Medical personnel, due to interstellar laws limiting medical officers from bearing sidearms on Away Missions, may not take this certification. No officer who does not possess this certification will be assigned armament heavier than a Type I phaser at any time, unless he or she is a Senior Command officer or Department Head, or at the express orders of Senior Command.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, the Security Branch Section Heads (Deputy Chief of Security, Security and Tactical Duty Officers, and Armory Officer) can proctor this exam. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is required to pass, with at least one success for each skill/specialty combination. In addition to this, the character must have achieved a score of 4 or better on the Warfighting & Physical Fitness portion of their last OER.

Tests for certification

  1. Planetary Tactics/Small-Unit vs 4
  2. Planetary Tactics/Small-Unit vs 7
  3. Planetary Tactics/Small-Unit vs 8
  4. Planetary Tactics/Small-Unit vs 10
  5. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 4
  6. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 7
  7. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 10
  8. Security/Security Procedures vs 4
  9. Security/Security Procedures vs 7
  10. Security/Security Procedures vs 10

Diplomatic Security

The diplomatic security certification qualifies an officer to serve as an armed security team member at formal diplomatic meetings, to handle security sweeps and checks that might touch on situations of diplomatic protocol, and to handle arrests and other confrontations that might be complicated by diplomatic immunity. Training and testing for this certification includes how to handle VIP hostage situations, how to carry a small weapon such as a Type I phaser discreetly, how to find weapons and explosives concealed within diplomatic pouches without overt and potentially offensive use of active scans, and what laws governing internal and interstellar diplomacy apply to any given situation. Should no officer at a posting possess this certification formally, all such matters must be handled personally by the Chief of Security or the command-branch Diplomatic Security Officer, if there is one, and cannot be delegated to anyone else without express and formal permission in writing by the Commanding Officer. Under Starfleet Regulations, only Security branch officers, and Command branch officers who already possess the Mission Security certification can test for and hold this certification; for purposes of this regulation, the Second Officer of a posting is considered to be Command branch even if they are formally in another branch by virtue of a concurrent department head position.

Proctors and Procedures

The Commanding Officer and Diplomatic Officer are the only default proctors of this exam, though the Executive and Second Officers, Security Chief, or any SDC section officer can proctor the exam if they already are certified in this capacity. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is required to pass, with at least one success for each skill/specialty combination. In addition to this, the character must have scored a 4 or better on the Warfighting & Physical Fitness portion of his or her most recent OER.

Tests for certification

  1. Law/Interstellar or Diplomacy/Intragalactic Law vs 4
  2. Law/Interstellar or Diplomacy/Intragalactic Law vs 7
  3. Law/Interstellar or Diplomacy/Intragalactic Law vs 8

  7. Security/Hostage Situations vs 10
  8. Concealment/Conceal Weapon vs 4
  9. Concealment/Conceal Weapon vs 7
  10. Concealment/Conceal Weapon vs 10

Demolitions/EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal)

This certification qualifies an officer to handle explosive ordinance for both placement and disposal.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, the Deputy Chief Engineer, Damage Control Engineer, Armory Officer, or Rapid Response Officer can proctor this exam if possessing the certification. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is considered passing as long as each Skill/Specialty combination has at least one successful +roll.

Note that this is a 'live simulation', with real -- though low-power and carefully shielded -- explosives to simulate the stresses of training with real hazardous materials. Should the character dramatically fail any test for the EOD certification, the proctor must make an Instruction/Professional Training test at a difficulty equal to the original contest that was dramatically failed by the test-taker. If this Instruction test is failed, or if the proctor lacks the Instruction skill, staff must be notified immediately to adjudicate the scene and determine the potentially dangerous or even lethal results of the cascade of failures.

Tests for certification

  1. Demolitions/Bomb Disposal vs 4
  2. Demolitions/Bomb Disposal vs 7
  3. Demolitions/Bomb Disposal vs 8
  4. Demolitions/Bomb Disposal vs 10
  5. Physical Sciences/Chemistry or Physics vs 4
  6. Physical Sciences/Chemistry or Physics vs 7
  7. Physical Sciences/Chemistry or Physics vs 10
  8. Material Engineering/Structural vs 4
  9. Material Engineering/Structural vs 7
  10. Material Engineering/Structural vs 10

NOTE: If the officer being tested can +prove Demolitions/Military Explosives, that skill/specialty can be substituted for either the Physical Sciences or the Material Engineering roll. This does not obviate the need to take the Demolitions/Bomb Disposal test, however.

First Contact

The name is somewhat misleading in that this certification is what qualifies a character to take part in pre-First Contact observation and surveillance missions. It balances studies and testing in the various Starfleet regulations governing pre-First Contact surveillance, especially with regards to the Prime Directive, with the use of holographic 'duck blind' and camouflage systems used to conceal survey teams. Also covered is the often-neglected art of the PADD; normally used just to access data, First Contact Teams tend to use these devices to their utmost to handle journal entries, interface with library data, remotely control the duck blinded systems, contact starships, and perform multiple operations all at the same time. Under Starfleet regulations, not only is this certification required for those taking part in ground-based surveillance or infiltration prior to a First Contact with an alien race, but it is also required that at least one member of any follow-up rescue or intervention team have this certification, though in both cases, this is waved for practicing First Contact Specialists.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, the First Contact Specialist can proctor this exam. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is required to pass. In addition to these tests, the character must have a positive Openness renown, and an Openness renown higher than his or her Aggression renown.

Tests for certification

  1. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 4
  2. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 7
  3. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 8
  4. Law/Starfleet Regulations vs 10
  5. Shipboard Systems/Holographics vs 4
  6. Shipboard Systems/Holographics vs 7
  7. Shipboard Systems/Holographics vs 10
  8. Personal Equipment/PADD vs 4
  9. Personal Equipment/PADD vs 7
  10. Personal Equipment/PADD vs 10

NOTE: An officer who can +prove the Multitasking merit will receive a +1 die bonus on the Personal Equipment/PADD tests, reflecting the test's emphasis on using a PADD for multiple data manipulation and remote equipment control functions at the same time.

Mission Operations

The Mission Operations certification qualifies an officer to serve at the Mission Operations console on the bridge or operations center of a ship or installation and monitor live Away Team missions in potentially hazardous situations. This certification is not required of individuals monitoring such missions in their official capacity -- e.g., a Diplomatic Officer monitoring a first contact, or the Chief Engineer monitoring a construction effort, or the Rapid Response Officer monitoring a Rapid Response ground-base assault -- but is required for such officers to monitor missions outside of their areas of authority. No mission below Security Clearance 5 may be submitted to Senior Command for approval without the sign-off of a Mission Operations officer in the planning stage.

Proctors and Procedures

In addition to the default proctors noted above, the Deputy Operations Officer, or any officer in the Mission Operations Section of the Operation Branch, can proctor this exam. The contests below are rolled, and a score of 6/10 is considered passing as long as each Skill/Specialty combination has at least one successful +roll.
