The baseline 'humanoid' race (as the root of the word implies), humans are the default standard species in the United Federation of Planets, due to a combination of aggressive expansive tendencies and a higher birth rate than most other Federation races. Due to early political and diplomatic steps by the United Earth Government in the early days of establishing the Federation, Earth is the legal and cultural 'center' of the UFP, housing the primary offices of both the civilian government and of Starfleet, and this shows in the fact that humans therefore make up a plurality, though not a majority, of service in the UFP government and in Starfleet. It should be noted that 24th century humans, especially those who manage to make the 'cut' and enter Starfleet service, are more psychologically fit than their pre-Federation ancestors, and better educated -- maladjusted humans do not 'make the grade' in Starfleet and are usually weeded out before they even make it out of Starfleet Academy.
