Exoanatomy

Exoanatomy is the study of the physical structure of numerous species.

Forensic Pathology

Forensic pathology is the branch of medical science that uses medical knowledge for legal purposes.

Pathology

Pathology is the study of the nature, origin, and course of diseases.

  • Teplan Blight - an engineered disease introduced to the indigenous inhabitants of the Teplan system by the Dominion as a penalty for their resistance.
  • Valir'ii Syndrome - a rare degenerative neurological disorder affecting the Romulan people. A process of genetic manipulation was discovered by Tovan Kassus in 2374 to correct the genetic flaw that leads to the disorder.

Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the scientific study of drugs and their effects, especially in the treatment of disease.

Medicines

  • Clonazepam - high-powered pain suppressant prepared by Zeran for the disembodied crew of USS Tribune NCC-74970 as they were returned to their bodies. Xain forbad the use of the drug, presumably because it would have an effect on the mind-meld.
  • Cylosilbin - high-powered pain suppressant requested by Zeran for Kale, although he refused treatment.

Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders.

Psychology

Psychology is the study of the mind or of mental states and processes.

Branches and Disciplines

  • Exopsychopathology - the study of the mental and emotional disorders that occur in species outside of the standard, non-telepathic humanoid (e.g., Betazoid, Bynar). tar-Zatain took a class in exopsychopathology at Starfleet Academy while working on his degree in psychology ("To Airy Thinness Beat").

Mental and Emotional Disorders

  • Anxiety Disorders - experiencing anxiety through both psychological and physiological symptoms that leads to some form of impairment of normal functioning.
    • Social Phobia - the fear of being judged when performing in public.
      • It may manifest itself in fear or avoidant behavior that interferes with professional performance or social relationships. LTJG tar-Zatain assessed LTJG Durgan for social phobia in 2378.
    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - a psychological response that occurs after a severe and extraordinary stressor.
      • This is typically beyond the realm of "normal" traumatic experiences such as the death of a loved one or diagnosis of a serious illness. Common symptoms come in two stages: first, there is avoidance of the stressor and denying or minimizing the traumatic event; next, the person experiences disturbing images, which often causes the person to relive the traumatic event. Some engineers from the Sisyphus Mines displayed symptoms related to this disorder.

Surgery and Procedures

  • Neural Induction
    • Neural induction is a method of direct stimulation of the nervous system of an individual person or creature to instill thought patterns, sub-rational emotional impulses such as fear or loyalty or lust, or direct control. This method is highly controversial in the Federation and is used by the Argrathi to train military recruits and to punish criminals ("Made, Not Born").

Toxicology

Toxicology is a branch of pharmacology that deals with nature, effects, and treatments of poisons.
