News Files:Advancement
From Star Trek: Gamma One
In the case of any discrepancy between the news files on the game and those here on the wiki, the news files on the game are correct version.
Advancement at all levels is a combination of IC activity, IC service history, and involvement in the game. The players who are involved in the events of the game and involved in duty roleplay are those players who will get to advance first. Some players prefer social roleplay, which is fine, but those players will advance more slowly.
Remember that on Star Trek: Gamma One, officers may, depending on their billeted position, be eligible for 'line qualification' as early as the rank of Lieutenant (JG). Being a line officer automatically puts one 'in the queue' for the privilege of leading IC missions in episodes. Given the epic scope of some episodes, particularly those in multi-part story arcs, it should therefore be remembered that PC officers on ST:GO as low as the rank of LTJG will be leading hugely important missions and making hugely important decisions. In short, please remember that an experienced LTJG line officer on ST:GO is often doing what Lieutenant Commanders do on other games -- they lead, and they shape the course of entire story arcs. Do not consider taking such a position a 'compromise' or 'second best' -- to be an IC line officer on this game is a big deal.
Advancement to the level of Department Head -- usually at the rank of full Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander -- is even more challenging. Department Heads (DHs) are important to the day to day functioning of the game and with regards to that functioning, they have IC and OOC perks and responsibilities. DHs help set policy, steer RP, and each DH is eligible to serve as acting CO of the ship or station for extended periods of time when Senior Command PCs and NPCs are unavailable. Consider the fact that the 'main characters' of every Star Trek series are basically the Department Heads. Department Heads are held to high standards of activity and performance.
We look at the following when considering advancement to a DH position:
- regular roleplay
- duty roleplay
- mentoring/teaching/working with junior officers
- roleplay over just making report entries
- available for meetings/appointments
- episode involvement
- report management
- long term player
- ICly proven character
- greeting guests (less important)
- involving new players
Please remember, above all, that advancement to a DH position is not a right. Staff will always strive to make promotions make sense in the course of the game, with advancement generally following the chain of command. However, sometimes it may become necessary for the greater good of the game, due either to IC or OOC issues of qualification or ability, to promote outside the regular promotion cycle. In these instances, staff will attempt to soften the blow to affected characters, but as this will not always be possible, players are asked for their understanding.
