From Star Trek: Gamma One
Star Trek: Gamma One uses a virtual equipment system to track what specialgear you have. This applies to stuff like combadges, phasers, medical kits and so on. Real objects are not created to reflect what equipment you have.
The +equip commands (see '+help equip') allow for concealing/revealing and for hide/unhiding. When something is concealed, it is ICly hidden on your person and you are still carrying it. For example, if you conceal a knife then you have it hidden. During events, plots or roleplay, staff may allow other characters to determine that you are carrying something concealed.
If you are concealing an item, please use common sense. For example, while a combadge can be concealed, if you are wearing a swimsuit there is no place to hide the combadge. If you are wearing a Starfleet duty uniform, you can not conceal a Type II phaser -- there is simply no where to hide it without it being obvious there is something under the uniform.
When you +equip/hide something, you are indicating you are not ICly carrying the object anymore. The object is, for all intents and purposes, left in your quarters or the armory or so on. If you start a scene with something hidden, then you may not be allowed to access it during the scene.
