News Files:Seniors
From Star Trek: Gamma One
In the case of any discrepancy between the news files on the game and those here on the wiki, the news files on the game are correct version.
As noted in Advancement and Alts, there is a class of PCs on Star Trek: Gamma One that gain significant perquisites at the cost of a high bar for admission and a restriction of one such PC per player. We refer to such officers as 'senior'. But the definition of 'senior officer' can vary by context, and so we offer the following guidelines.
By default, the phrase 'senior officer' refers specifically to the Senior Command (CO, XO) and Department Heads (Operations Manager, Chief Engineer, Security Chief, Science Officer, and Chief Medical Officer, one of which will usually pull additional duty as 'Second Officer', as explained in 'news 2O') of a given ship or starbase. Unless IC context or OOC followup should indicate otherwise, this meaning should be assumed.
'Senior Officer', however, can also be used more expansively, to include other officers. When the more expansive context is indicated, but these other officers are not specifically included, it should be assumed that the speaker (be the speaker a PC or NPC, ICly, or a staffer speaking OOCly in a BBpost, for instance) is referring to line qualified command branch officers. This is the context, for instance, for assigning 'senior officers quarters' -- 8 to 10 such quarters exist on senior officer housing decks under ST:GO's default building scheme, and yet only 7 Senior Command and DH positions exist, meaning that between 1 and 3 suites will be available as a perk of the job to such 'second tier senior officers' as the ship or station's lead diplomatic attache or counterintelligence officer.
Sometimes, Assistant Department Heads may even be included by context. Remember, in short, that context is key, and if specific usages confuse you due to lack of context, do not be afraid to ask for clarification. Note that any such confusion is your duty to dispel.
