The Chief of Research and Exploration (CRE) oversees Starfleet's mandate for exploration and scientific inquiry. The CRE serves as a clearinghouse for all scientific research and discoveries made by Starfleet personnel; said research and discoveries are also subject to review and critique by this Office. The commanding officer for the CRE holds the rank of Vice Admiral or higher and reports directly to the Starfleet Chief of Staff. Four departments report directly to the CRE: Astronomical Science Operations, Planetary Science Operations, Starfleet Medical, and Science Operations. The Office of the Chief of Research and Exploration is located at Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco on Earth.
