Office of the Executive Admiral and the Fleet Admiralties

The Executive Admiral is charged with overseeing operations and deployment of all Starfleet starships. Reporting directly to the Executive Admiral are the commanding officers of the various fleets. The organization of Starfleet vessels into fleets varies depending upon the situation. For instance, in times of war, nearly all Starfleet vessels may be organized into fleets for defensive and offensive purposes, but during times of peaceful exploration, a fleet admiral may have oversight of starships that are tens of light-years apart. It should be noted that fleet admiral is a position rather than a separate rank given to a flag officer who is responsible for the deployment of a certain set of starships. There is also a flag officer who reports directly to the Executive Admiral for task forces that have been created for special duty assignments.
The Office of the Executive Admiral is located at Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco on Earth. The Fleet Admirals maintain offices aboard various starships and installations throughout Federation space.
