Dossier

Henrik Hercule Schuyler is a Terran-born human, specifically of Dutch and Walloon (French-speaking Belgian) ancestry, from the border of the Belgian province of Liège and the Dutch province of Limburg. His father's lineage contains military and service fleet officers sporadically, going back several generations, with his father having served during the transition from UESPA's Star Fleet to the UFP Starfleet from the late 2100s into the early 2200s. His mother is from a long line of craftspeople and artisans spread throughout the Low Countries of Northern Europe.

Henrik Schuyler was raised to the ideals of skilled work, service, and public civic participation. He began his course of study at the Academy in Applied Mathematics, belonging to that school of thought that Mathematics, in theory and application, is the mother and father of all other disciplines of any branch of science, engineering, and applied technology. It allowed him, though trained as a pilot with the bulk of his professional training courses, to serve well on his Cadet Cruise as a deputy quartermaster with the Deck department of what was then a major frontier starbase, plotting short-distance trade routes and clockwork galley schedules which made him a rapidly developing expert in what his first mentor, Commodore Tyler Stockton of Starbase 10, called 'gastronomic diplomacy'. Even now, more than 40 years later, FCPT Schuyler continues that trade -- studying the culinary and cultural as well as practical and military supply and support of colonies and allies would lead him, on either TDY duty assignment in the 2240s or full leave of absence in the 2260s, to earn graduate degrees in related fields from the London School of Economics and the Vulcan School of Diplomacy. His eye for logistics also made him not just competent but excellent as the founding Provost of the Saturn Flight Range of Starfleet Academy; since he opened its doors as its first commanding officer and overseer in 2255, he has no longer been an active pilot himself, but a trainer and facilitator of same, including his own current first officer, Commander Glarpin, who was one of the first students at the Range.

FCPT Schuyler's keen mind for creative mathematical and logistical solutions extends beyond his administrative and diplomatic work -- he is like most modern Starfleet captains a trained strategist as well as a tactician in ship-to-ship combat, and is said to be aided in this by a photographic memory that allows him to recall the studied tactical patterns and strategic gambits of Captains he has never met but only studied from afar. He keeps reasonably fit for his age with a continued athletic regimen of long-range hikes and winter-sports such as skiing and skating in the countryside on planets which have terrain suitable for such sports; on ship, he prefers light calisthenics, Terran yoga and its Vulcan equivalent, and a personal combat skills regimen which combines French Savate (kickboxing) and Le Canne de Combat (stick and cane fighting) with Starfleet Academy boxing lessons and the internal and meditative Vulcan art of Ponn-Ifla which he studied while taking his troon-arr at the VSD. He continues to ply his youthful skills as a chef and tailor to his own sartorial and gastronomic splendors, and has been known to make some of his own civilian attire and little snacks with the textiles and ingredients of a dozen worlds.

If Schuyler has a weakness, it is perhaps the fair guess of many rivals and enemies that his overconfidence masks years of self-doubt -- he holds the record for the longest-serving Brevet Captaincy in Starfleet, keeping that rank in a 'holding pattern' for more than a decade before he was finally conferred it as a permanent rank with a permanent ship-of-the-line command. It is whispered that he is easily goaded into rash or unwise actions, even to the point of alienating his staunchest supporters, by threats against the rank and position he waited so long to achieve. He has made many enemies over the years, from the Klingon troopers and starship commanders he has faced in border combat repeatedly over more than 35 of his 47 years in the Fleet, to some of the Federation's own human and Vulcan diplomats and bureaucrats he has angered with his achievements and arrogance over the years. It is also well known that on at least one mission of USS Potemkin, his previous command, he personally led the diplomatic push which ousted a Flaxian force from taking over a failed Andorian colony, effectively denying the Flaxians major power status as a multi-colonial power of their own, and that he is referred to in Flaxian popular culture as The World-Thief.
