Until late 2377, this system was home to a series of Dominion mining and prison camps unified under military command. Most of these mining camp complexes are in planetoids and asteroids around the primary star, Sisyphus. One small and one larger, newer complex also identified in a similar asteroid field around the Tantalus companion star.

The entire series of complexes around both the primary and companion star were, from late 2375 to late 2377, under the specific command of First Vol'kha'zai, a Jem'Hadar leader who had been delegated command by an unnamed Vorta overseer. This overseer fled the system after Dominion pullback from the Alpha Quadrant and partial pullback in the Gamma Quadrant after the Battle of Cardassia.

In late 2377, Vol'kha'zai and his Second and Third surrendered the entire binary system to Captain Michael Mitellan of USS Marathon, allowing the Federation to stake legal claim to the binary system, perfectly situated in proximity to the Idran Sector Bajoran Wormhole terminus and to unexplored space (See And In Our Labors Equal).

This system is the site of Outpost Gamma One.

Follow up surveys and sweeps of the binary star rescued over 100 remaining Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, and other POWs, but no records were found of any Starfleet officers surviving past mid-2376. Amongst the remaining POWs, morale was low due to constant suspicion of cooperation with the Dominion, and multiple accusations were hurled amongst Cardassian and Klingon prisoners (See No Stones But Stars).

The last wave of Cardassian survivors contained at least 5 individuals who had been wanted for war crimes by the Alliance during the Cardassian alliance with the Dominion (See Merry Meet, Fellow Travelers). IKS Itliq, the Romulan Starbird Orelan Gaius, and the Cardassian battle cruiser Argandr were among the ships hauling off their POWs.

Shortly before the end of 2377, a strange decompression occured on the larger of the two Tantalus complexes, killing two Starfleet officers from a 12 man sweep team. An odd subspace signal was later determined to be emitting from the deep gouge left by the explosion, but the origin of which has yet to be determined.

The sweeps of the complexes have also revealed a great deal of scuttled Dominion technology, and the first stage of the Gamma One Construction Project assumedly involves turning the complexes into a secondary base of operations for construction efforts, combining Allied and enemy technology in much the same way as Deep Space 9 was built from the Terok Nor ore refinery.
