Starship Registry Numbers
From Star Trek: Gamma One
Many governments employ the use of registry numbers on starships for the purposes of tracking and regulation. For non-military craft, a registry number is often associated with an operator's license to conduct specific types of trade or commerce. There are some governments, like the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire that do not assign registry numbers to their vessels. The Cardassian Union and Ferengi Alliance do not precede the names of their vessels with any prefix.
