The remnant of a supernova.

When an old star dies there is a resulting massive explosion, a supernova. As an old red giant runs out of helium fuel, the star collapses under the weight of its own gravity. The collapse produces a shockwave which blows the outer layers away from the star and into space. This leaves a core which is either a neutron star or a black hole depending on the remaining mass.

Under Federation Science Council Directive 1104, issued in the year 2301 by the Federation Science Council and folded into Starfleet regulations by order of the Chief of Research and Exploration that same year, it is named simply for the type of stellar body, the stardate on which it was discovered, the quadrant of space in which it was found, and a suffix indicating the order in which it was found in case of multiple findings at the same time.
