General Information
USS Merrimac is a Constitution-class heavy cruiser originally commissioned in 2352. The vessel underwent a major systems overhaul and was 'recommissioned' in 2266. In 2368, the Merrimac was assigned to general exploration duties in the Beta Quadrant. This mission was regarded as one of Starfleet's most successful exploratory missions of the late 23rd century. The vessel is lauded for making first contact with half a dozen new species during the course of its mission.
In 2274, Merrimac returned from its exploration mission and participated in several years of peace-keeping and patrol duties near the Tholian border.
The Constitution-class starship was first put into production and became the primary ship-of-the-line during the mid-23rd century. They were among the first Federation starships that could sustain long-term missions without refit and resupply. During its time, it was not only well-suited for scientific and exploratory missions, but it was also well-armed.
Known Ships of this Class
Saurians are a sentient reptile species hailing from Sauria II. Like Earth reptiles they are cold blooded and adapt to life aboard Federation ships via heated underwear. The Saurian language is one of the most complex encountered by the Federation due to its melodic nature. Despite their membership in the Federation and service aboard Starfleet ships, they remain much more tight-knit than other races and are less likely to be part of mixed-race crews.
Located in San Francisco on Earth, Starfleet Academy is the training institution for all uniformed officers serving in Starfleet. In addition to the main campus, there are a number of satellite campuses and other affiliated facilities throughout the Federation. The commanding officer of Starfleet Academy, and also the Corps of Cadets, is known as the superintendant. The institution also maintains a prestigious staff, consisting of some of the best Starfleet officers and brightest minds in the Federation. Starfleet Academy offers a standard baccalaureate degree as well as advanced degrees in several areas.
