United Federation of Planets
From Star Trek: Gamma One
The United Federation of Planets, also referred to as the Federation or UFP, is an interstellar state composed of planetary governments and colonies. The various members of the Federation are organized under the unifying goals of universal liberty, equality, peaceful coexistence, trade, science, exploration, and mutual defense. Its territory encompasses at least several dozen sectors in both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, spread across nearly 8,000 light years of space. As of stardate 3219.8, the Federation was spread across more than 1,000 worlds. (TOS: "Metamorphosis") In 2268 there were at least 30 members (TOS: "Journey to Babel"), and by 2373, there were more than 150 members of the Federation, and over 1,000 semi-autonomous colonies. (Star Trek: First Contact)
The Federation is one of the most powerful interstellar states of the Alpha Quadrant. Unlike the vast majority of other major and regional empires, where power is derived from a single dominant race that subjugate other nearby planets and species, all members of the Federation joined willingly and coexisted equally with other members. Although its multispecies origin has caused it to be labeled a "mongrel" power by some outsiders, its diverse origins have also given it a unique strength over the past 200 years.
The Federation is also famous for its technological resources and personnel. In particular, Federation engineers were respected as masters of technology, repair, and modification, even by enemies of the organization, such as the Dominion.

Current Government
The current Federation President is Belesco of Tiburon, a former Merchant Marine Admiral, former Ambassador of Tiburon to the United Federation of Planets, former Ambassador of the UFP to Ferenginar, and former Minister of Trade. He is in his 70s, just entering old age for a Tiboronian, having retired from his first career -- the Merchant Marine -- in his early 50s in 2357, as the equivalent of a Starfleet Rear Admiral (Upper Half), to take up his world's ambassadorship to the Federation Council. Faced with political backlash for voting for peace with the Cardassians in 2364, he was ousted from office by a homeworld referendum, but had the sympathy of powerful friends in the FDC and the office of the UFP President, and was named as the Federation's first fully accredited senior Ambassador to Ferenginar in 2366 (for two years prior to that, the UFP sent and received only 'special envoys' to the Ferengi Commerce Authority). He was recalled in 2369 to take up an important underministry post within the Federation's Ministry of Trade, a quasi-diplomatic executive position settling trade disputes between Federation member worlds without the tedium of full Federation Council intervention. When Jaresh-Inyo became President of the UFP in 2371, he tapped Belesco to take over the entire Ministry of Trade; when Jaresh-Inyo resigned in mid-2375 with almost two years remaining on his six-year term, for reasons of failing health, he proposed Belesco to succeed him and complete his term. Federation Law permitted Belesco to place his name in consideration a second, full, term, to run from 2377 to 2383. Belesco won the election from the second term and was sworn into office 24 November 2377.
