Warp 5 Limitation

In 2370 it was discovered that normal operation of warp engines caused damage to the fabric of spacetime. As a result the Federation Science Council imposed a limitation of Warp 5 on all vessels except in case of emergency. The problem was resolved in late 2370 and early 2371 by the engineering team working on the Interpid-class. The same developments in variable warp field geometry used in the variable-geometry pylons allowed for safe faster than Warp 5 travel. These advancements were shared with the Klingons. The Romulans use a different technology now. Warp drives still can damage subspace if improperly tuned or if damaged, but they no longer do so through normal operation. Warp drives of non-Federation races that use similar principles might still have the problem.
