Xytani System

The Xytani System is a star system near the Federation/Klingon border claimed by the Klingon Empire in late 2278. The system consists of four planets, three class G and one class L, orbiting a yellow-white main sequence star. Xytani is most notable as the site of a Federation incursion into Klingon space in early 2279.

Xytani Incursion Incident

In early 2279, the USS Endeavour entered the Xytani system based on intelligence provided through an Orion agent. Believing the recently-claimed system to be in the process of becoming a staging ground for Klingon biological weapons, the Endeavour rushed in to intervene. Instead of finding biological weapons, however, the Endeavour found a trap set by the Klingons. Endeavour ran headlong into a minefield, with the resulting series of explosions crippling the ship as Klingon vessels moved in to capture the 'intruder' before it could extract itself.

In a last-ditch attempt to free the ship, LT Henri Mercier's shuttle squadron launched to sweep a path back out. The effort was successful, though at a cost of two shuttlecraft. The wrecked Endeavour was able to escape from the Klingon trap and limp back across the Federation border.

The aftermath of the incursion claimed the careers of nearly all of Endeavour's surviving senior staff. While the ship had successfully escaped the Klingon trap, the crippling of a Constitution-class cruiser in Klingon-claimed space, and the flurry of diplomatic protests that followed, was a major embarrassment for the fleet.
