Sensors provide valuable medical, engineering, scientific and defensive information to ships and stations. Specialized sensors are grouped together into arrays.

Long Range Sensors: These sensors scan long distances, reaching up to 17 lightyears from the array, and scan out in a 45 degree arc. High resolution scans can be performed up to 5 light years away. They scan for EM emissions, graviton particles, neutrino tracks, and thermal images.

Lateral or Short Range Sensors: These provide more detailed information about nearby objects and phenomena. They can scan items and areas up to 1 light year away.

Navigational Sensors: These sensors are linked directly to the Conn station of a starship and monitor position and velocity.

Tactical Sensors: These sensors allow for targeting locks in the heat of battle. In "The Remaining Third Empty", it is revealed that due to conflicts with the Federation, the Cardassians and Ferengi have both upgraded their tactical packages in recent years after embarassing technical limitations were revealed in some very famous battles at Chin'toka and Maxia , respectively.
